Transfer limits in Ukraine: NBU rules and bank restrictions

Distinguishing incoming international payments, outgoing transfers and checks on the source of funds.

Why there is no single limit for everyone

Incoming international payments, transfers between Ukrainian cards and sending money abroad have different rules. Service and bank restrictions for the particular product also apply. An amount allowed through one channel may not qualify through another.

Do not apply an outgoing limit from an old article to receiving money from abroad. First identify the direction, currency, account type and sending method.

What changed in the 150,000-hryvnia rule

The NBU did not extend the temporary regulatory restriction of 150,000 hryvnias per month on individuals' outgoing card-to-card transfers. This does not mean that bank financial monitoring or all internal limits were abolished.

The NBU announcement separately describes restrictions applied by banks participating in a memorandum to customers without documented income. These terms cannot be presented as a universal limit on incoming international transfers.

What to prepare for a review

The bank may ask about the payment's purpose and source of funds. A technically acceptable amount does not remove that possibility. Prepare documents that reflect the actual situation.

  • Income statements or payslips for your own earned funds.
  • An agreement and payment evidence when the transfer concerns a transaction.
  • An explanation of the sender-recipient relationship if the bank requests it.
  • Confirmation of the international transfer and its purpose.

How to find your payment's restriction

Check the sender app's limit and then the receiving bank's terms. Agree on documents in advance for a large or unusual transfer. Do not split transactions to circumvent checks.
